With so many residences near Spanish Lake Park, it was important to provide improved pedestrian access to the sprawling park. Oates Associates assisted the St. Louis County Department of Transportation in assessing and identifying cost effective options to provide an ADA compliant pedestrian connection along Spanish Pond Road and across the BNSF railroad tracks into Spanish Lake Park.

Three bridge options were considered with evaluation criteria including design feasibility, constructability, railroad impacts, utility impacts, and estimated construction costs. A new standalone pedestrian bridge was selected as the best option to convey pedestrian traffic. The new structure will be adjacent to the existing traffic bridge. The concrete deck on the traffic bridge will be replaced with improvements to the roadway, sidewalk and drainage. Sidewalk will be added to the west side to provide a continuous path from Gene Crayton Avenue to Spanish Lake Park.
