Constructed in 1966, the University’s Science Building had become out of date and was operating at capacity.  As a result, SIU Edwardsville decided to renovate the existing building and construct a new, state-of-the-art Science Building to neighbor the existing structure.  The University wants to furnish superior facilities to attract scholarly staff and students.

The new 136,000 square foot facility includes specialized labs, animal care facilities, a machine shop, offices, conference rooms, student study spaces and student lounges.  The structure is connected to the original Science Building via a covered walkway.  The new building, which was designed using sustainable design initiatives, is LEED Silver certified.

Oates Associates provided LEED consulting, survey, site design, utility coordination and construction administration services for the new Science Building.  The scope of work included the design of a 2,500 square foot bio-swale to manage storm water runoff from the new and existing buildings as well as a 1,000 square foot porous concrete parking area.  Work also included the relocation of a water main, which involved applying for an IEPA permit.
