The intersection of Broadway/St. Rose Road and Iberg Road/Veterans Honor Parkway was experiencing safety issues due to increased traffic and accidents.  Roughly 85% of the accidents at the intersection were angular or turning crashes.  With even further anticipated growth/traffic, Oates Associates worked with the City to mitigate safety concerns.  The solution was a roundabout at the four-way intersection.
Three different roundabout options were explored, which considered impacts to properties, utilities and pedestrian facilities.  After reviewing layouts with the City, the Madison County Highway Department and Illinois Department of Transportation,  Oates Associates designed a 4-legged roundabout with a shared-use path.  The new roundabout reduces vehicles speeds and the potential for crashes.
Oates Associates assisted in securing Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funding for the improvements.  Work also included field surveys; an intersection design study; project development report; right-of-way negotiation/acquisition services; and preparing plans, specifications and estimates.  Oates was also involved throughout the construction phase, answering questions and providing construction staking.
