SIUE ENGINEERING BUILDING
CONSTRUCTION COST: $20,000,000
COMPLETION DATE: 2000
CLIENT: SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY EDWARDSVILLE
Steadily increasing enrollment and a need for a modern learning facility were the driving factors behind a new building for engineering students. Wanting to provide an environment conducive to students’ needs, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville constructed this state-of-the-art Engineering Building.
This 130,000 square foot, four-story facility features laboratories, high-tech equipment, computer labs, classrooms, offices and an auditorium. Unique characteristics of the building are the suspended staircases and glass curtain walls. An acre of glass was used to create an affinity with the outdoors.
Oates Associates provided survey, site and structural design services. Site improvements included access and parking planning for the northwest quadrant of the campus, a new entrance road to the Engineering and Art and Design Buildings, new access to Parking Lot E and an expansion of Parking Lot E.
The project is a recipient of the Illinois Capital Development Board’s 2001 Thomas H. Madigan Award as well as the Excellence in Masonry Award from the Masonry Institute of Southern Illinois.
