Oates Associates was contacted by Washington University to conduct a field investigation on the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) Building and the Barnard Building due to visible signs of deterioration exhibited by the masonry veneer. The scope of services established for the field investigation include noting all observed deficiencies, identifying potential failure mechanisms and recommending possible solutions along with their associated repair cost.

After completing the inspection and identifying the deficiencies and developing solutions to repair the buildings, Oates Associates was contracted to complete design and construction document services. The scope of work involved documenting the removal and replacement of stone quoins, the removal and replacement of damaged face brick, exposure of steel lintels for cleaning and coating, the removal and replacement of stone coping, the installation of new expansion and control joints, and the installation of new flashing at lintels, copings, opening heads and sills, and the installation of end dams.
